Dell pulls Windows Mobile 2003 update!
Posted Thursday, 31 JUL 2003
|
 |
Dell Inc. has pulled the downloadable patch fixing the problem between Windows Mobile 2003 and the Axim X5 firmware, after some clever hackers figured out a way to use the patch to illegally upgrade their
Axim's from the PocketPC 2002 OS to Windows Mobile 2003.
The patch was intended to fix the problems in units shipped with Windows Mobile already installed. Dell has offered an inexpensive upgrade ($29 US) for owners currently running PocketPC 2002
with the price covering the cost of Microsoft's OS Licensing fee and Dell's own cost.
Apparently that wasn't good enough for some people, so now the patch is delayed for everyone as Dell ships out CD's to those already affected by the Windows Mobile bug before sending out the upgrade for people
who legitimately ordered it.

Dell Fixes Axim X5 PPC 2003 Issue
Posted Monday, 28 JUL 2003
|
 |
1. Dell resumed shipping new Axim X5 units on Friday. They continued to take orders while they worked on the fix to the firmware problem, but orders are being shipped first-come, first-served. Check your order status to see your revised shipping date.
2. Dell WILL be posting a ROM update ONLY FOR EFFECTED AXIM X5s by Wednesday of this week at their support site. This ROM update is ONLY for effected Dell Axim X5 handhelds that shipped with the Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC OS -- It is NOT a full ROM upgrade, so don't even think of trying to download and upgrade your Pocket PC 2002 model -- it will NOT work! Make sure you understand -- this ROM update is for the handfull of new Axims with the new OS that had the firmware glitch.

Dell finds the WM2003 performance problem!
Posted Wednesday, 16 JUL 2003
|
 |
Dell has found a firmware problem which appears to be the source of the performance issue for the Axim which running the Windows Mobile 2003 OS upgrade. They have not announced if and when a fix
will be available. Dell also announced that while they will still be taking orders for the Axim, order fulfillment will be delayed until a fix can be implemented.
While the problem is a slight embarrassment to Dell and a bit of pain, it is very reassuring to see them addressing this issue. By even offering an upgrade, Dell has shown a
commitment towards supporting the Axim and its owners. If there are a few stumbles while trying to keep up with new innovations, it's a small price to pay.

Windows Mobile 2003 appears..to...slow....the.....Axim......down!
Posted Monday, 14 JUL 2003
|
 |
There have been a number of users reporting that the upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 impeding the performance of the Axim. We have run a series of test and can
confirm, that Axim's running the new OS are indeed running certain tasks slower, in some cases much, much slower. Running the same tests against an Axim running
PPC2002 and a Viewsonic V37 running WM2003, it appears the problem is in the interaction between the OS upgrade and hardware drivers, not the MS OS or the Dell Axim hardware itself.
Dell has not officially acknowledged a problem, but with the growing amount of evidence, Dell is going to need to do something. Hopefully the problem is something they'll will
be able to address fairly quickly.

Dell Axim X3 rumored to be on its way.
Posted Monday, 7 JUL 2003
|
 |
Brighthand is reporting that the Dell Axim X3 is coming perhaps as soon as November. Of the rumored two new members of the Axim family, the X3 and the X7,
the X3 is supposed to be the low end compliment to or replacement for X5. Target price will be lower than the X5 basic, but with only one expansion slot.
Most likely, the slot will be Secure Digital/SDIO. The X7 is supposedly similar to the X5 but with built-in wireless (Does that mean Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or GPRS?)
Go check the "RumorMill" over at Brighthand.

New Dell SmartPhone and PDA
Posted Friday, 27 JUN 2003

Jason Dunn over at PocketPCThoughts:
" "Dell Computer has revealed that the next generation of its Axim handheld will include both Wi-Fi and triband radios, signaling a new wave of mobile productivity. In addition, an executive at the company's headquarters here said Dell plans to develop a device based on Microsoft's Smartphone platform.
The next generation Axim will allow users to switch between Wi-Fi networks and CDMA or GSM networks. Due out in 2004, the device will likely support 802.11g, which offers backward compatibility with 802.11b and speeds of up to 31Mbps.
The Axim will also include Bluetooth to permit synchronization with client devices, including notebooks, said Anthony Bonadero, Dell's director of wireless product marketing, during a set of exclusive briefings arranged for InfoWorld here this week."
Ok, now this really got me excited - the one combination that would, for my needs, be killer is WiFi and GPRS or 1XRTT in a single device. Adding Bluetooth is just a cherry on top - the first two are what I really want. Go Dell go! And a Dell Smartphone? Cool!"

Order the Windows Mobile 2003 OS upgrade for Dell Axim X5
Posted Thursday, 26 JUN 2003
|
 |
From the Dell web site:
"Upgrade your Dell Axim X5 to Microsoft Pocket PC 2003. Pocket PC 2003 represents an even better experience with improved wireless connectivity, a better messaging experience, new and improved media capabilities."
It looks like several of the other pda vendors are foregoing an upgrade for their handhelds. It is great to see Dell release an update so quickly and at $29.00, the cost is quite reasonable.
The upgrade is available for order on CDROM, but unfortunately there is no download version.
