The Connection Manager screen can be a little confusing when you first look at it.
The screen is divided into three sections:
The first section with the icon of the PDA connected to the world is the "Internet" setting.
The second section with the icon of the PDA connected to the office building is the "Work" setting.
And, the third section with the icon of the two computers connected is the "Network Card" setting.
Ok, so what the heck do the three settings actually mean?
Microsoft in their usual heavy-handed approach to integration has decided that, for your convenience, accessing certain other programs which are included in the Pocket PC OS will cause your pda to automatically attempt to make a network connection. Now, depending on which application you are using and moreover "how" you are using the application, Pocket PC will automatically make a determination as to which type of connection you are intending to use.
So, if you open Pocket Internet Explorer, type "http://www.dellpda.com" in the address line, and hit enter, Pocket PC will try to start a network connection with your "Internet" settings. If, on the other hand, you simply type "DellPda" into the address line, Pocket PC will attempt to make a network connection using your "Work" settings. MSN messenger will use "Internet" settings when using a Passport server or "Work" settings when using an Exchange server. ActiveSync will only use the "Work" settings. Some applications, such as InBox, allow you to configure it to one of the two settings, but none of the applications allow you to turn the function off. I personally would have preferred the options of automatically attempting to connect, being prompted to make a network connection and then selecting my specific connection type, or being able to turn automatic connection off altogether. But alas, such is life.
If you are using a WiFi or Ethernet network card instead of a modem, automatic network connections will attempt to use the network settings selected in the "network card" drop down list, either The Internet or Work. You can manually select a connection to the network by navigating to the Connection Manager screen and clicking the Connect button for the particular setting that you would like to use. The Connect button is disabled when the PDA is cradled and running ActiveSync.
We will ignore the automatic connection settings for now. Instead, press the Dialing Locations tab at the bottom of the screen.
