The Dialing Locations screen is where you specify the location from where you are attempting to connect.
|
|
The location drop down list is prepopulated with a home and a work entry, but others can be added to the list. The first screen allows you to input your area and country codes, to select either pulse or tone dialing, and to disable call waiting.
The Dialing Patterns screen is where you provide specific information for dialing local, long distance, and international numbers. The dialing patterns consist of a series of letters, numbers, and commas. The letters include E, F, and G, which are used to designate country code, area code, and the local number respectively. The letters are place holders which are replaced automatically with the call numbers when attempting a connection.
The numbers entered in the dialing pattern are literal. If you are at a location which requires you to dial the number 9 in order to obtain an outside line, you would add it ahead of the letters for the local number. Likewise if the number 1 is used to indicate a long distance call, it would be placed in the dialing pattern ahead of the area code designator.
The comma represents a pause which can be used to accomodate the slight delay in changing from a local switch to a long distance switch or secondary carrier before dialing the rest of the number. So, commas normally appear in the dialing patterns in cases such as getting an outside line or dialing internationally.
The Connection manager uses the location displayed in the Location drop down list, and compares the country code and area code between the dialing location and the target connection to determine the type of call and correspondingly the dialing pattern to use. For example, if you selected your home location which was area code 212 in New York City and the target connection was area code 773 in Chicago, then the Connection Manager would use the long distance dialing pattern when attempting the connection. If you were in Chicago and attempting to call either locally or back home to New York, you would simply press the New button under the Location drop down and create a new Location called CHICAGO, set the area code to 773, and select CHICAGO from the Location drop down list.
After selecting the Location, press the Connections tab to return to the Connection Manager screen.
