Setting up Password Protection

Since sensitive data is often entered into a pda, it is advantageous to have a mechanism for securing that data.  Pocket PC offers a password protection scheme.  Password protection can be enabled through the password screen in Personal settings.

By default, the password protection is turned off.  If password protection is desired, the user can select either to use a simple four digit passcode or a stronger alphanumeric password.  Selecting the four digit passcode brings up a virtual numeric keypad for data entry.

Selecting to use an alphanumeric password will bring up the virtual keyboard, a password input box, and a box for password confirmation.   The password must be at least seven characters long, have both uppercase and lowercase letters, and at least one number or punctuation mark.

There is a drop down list for setting the amount of time that the pda can be left idle before the user is required to input the password.   If the time is set to zero, the user will have to input a password whenever the pda is turned on.  The user will also have to input the password in order to access the password settings screen.

When attempting to connect the pda to a computer via activesync while password protection is on, the user will have to enter the password on the computer side in order to complete the link.
